You will need:

  • 1 grapefruit
  • 1-2 limes
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 pint raspberries
  • 1 bottle Sauvignon Blanc wine
  • 2 cans sparkling lemonade or soda water
  • 1 cup simple syrup (equal parts sugar and hot water, stirred to dissolve sugar)
  • ice

  • pitcher or jug
  • wooden spoon
  • glass jar with lid, or muddler
  • knife and cutting board
  • juicing implement

Step 1: slice and juice citrus fruits, add to pitcher
I suggest cutting three slices from the center of each fruit and then juicing the ends.  This will give more than enough juice, and you get beautiful, wide cores for your slices which makes for pretty presentation.  I’m not fussy about seeds, but if you prefer you can juice the fruits over a strainer and then pick out the seeds and return the pulp to your pitcher with the juice.

Step 2: add raspberries (1/2 whole, 1/2 muddled)
Add half of the raspberries to the pitcher whole, then muddle the rest and add them too.  For an easy way to muddle, just put the raspberries in a glass jar with some of your ice cubes and shake.  Once they’re all nicely crushed, add them to the pitcher with your whole raspberries, juice and citrus slices.

TIP: When you rinse your raspberries, separate the pretty ones from those that are crushed or in any way less-than-picture-perfect, and muddle the latter ones while leaving the pretty ones whole!

Step 3: add wine and remaining ingredients
Add the sauvignon blanc, sparkling lemonade, simple syrup and ice, and stir to mix.  Pour into glasses and serve.  There you have it – simple, bright, refreshing sangria to enjoy on a hot summer day!
